Enlisted or Officer

Alright guys - I have a very large question that will get many different opinions but here it goes.

I am 25 years old and have a B.S. degree. I have to desire to serve in either the USAF or the Army (Marines won't take me enlisted because of age and I've never been much for boats) - I have grand ideas but very few actual experiences - I have a lot of friends serving and they all tell me the fringe benefits of the USAF can't be beat. However, the Army allows for higher enlisted ranking - but I'm not in it for the money

Either way I plan on doing EOD with an initial duty station in Italy. The problem is going officer would be better because of rank and benefits - however it would not allow my contract to state an MOS of my choice.

If I went enlisted I would eventually petition to co to officer's training - but some people are telling me to just go officer from the get-go...

I have been preparing to go to basic - I have lost 83lbs over the last 6 months and meet the physical minimums as is - but I am waiting until July 2012 to sign - just looking for guidance if anyone has any opinions to share.

I am not in the military yet but through my brother-in-law who is currently a Captain in the United States Army says that going to OCS through the Army will take some time. There is a huge waiting period and he says that you go there once you complete BCT and he has had buddies down there for several months trying to get in. I am trying to get in to a ROTC program because I only have a 2 year degree and all schools I have talked to are booked with scholarship founds that they currently are not taking any applications at the time. I am starting to look out of state to just find a ROTC program. Best of luck to you, keep your head up and your determination strong!

As an enlisted; you cannot chose what duty station you want off the back. I just returned from Germany so I know. Also, going officer, you will be given the branch deemed by needs of the Army and/or based on your OML.

With the upcoming reduction; it is harder to get into OCS but if you are qualified then go for it. If you apply for OCS while an enlisted but it does take time. Look at possibly two years after you enlist.

My suggestion is try to go officer first; it not then enlisted.
