From what I understand, "huggers" are people who go to military homecomings simply to be there to welcome home the service members that do not have people there to do so.Shortly after welcoming a friend of mine home from a seven month deployment to Iraq, I heard about "huggers". I hadnt really noticed them before I heard about them, but as I welcomed my friend home, I noticed a lot of service members that didnt have people there to greet them, so they just went to the barracks like it was any other day. I was talking to a friend of mine about "huggers" and we are thinking about trying it. I wanted to see what you guys (and gals of course) thought about it. Do you think it would be go over well, or do you think we would just be looked at as stupid and be ignored? Do you think people would go along with it, or would it just make people uncomfortable?

thanks for your input!...but because we are young (we're both 19) do you think they would think we are there only to try to hook up with someone? I just dont want to show up and then things be awkward because they dont like the idea as much as the few people I have talked to, or to give te wrong idea...

Honestly I doubt anyone would notice. People are going to be excited thier loved one is coming back, everyone will be hugging everyone and there not going to be paying attention to something like that.

That sounds like a great idea. when i came back from iraq there was no one to greet me, and it woulda been kinda cool for some one just to come up to me and say thank you, or welcome back to the states. it was kinda like an alone feeling when you see all your friends and they have all their families waiting for them. im sure no one would even think that you were trying to hook with them. its a really great idea.

I wouldn't mind a hugger, as long as she's cute and single... Hug can lead to future, uh, hugs?:D

I like that idea also, it shows that people other then personal friends and family care about the service to our country some one has given. I personally would be a hugger.

I wouldn't be a hugger but I would be a beer buyer!
Seen a troop out with his wife and two small kids eating dinner and I paid for the dinner.
I asked thte waitress not to tell them who paid for it but she did anyway and he thanked me as I thanked him for his service and he bought me a beer and we called it even.

My base has a high deployment rate. We don't deploy as long as the army does, but we do deploy often (curently on 4th in 3 yrs). We have always come back in ones and twos with no big crowds awaiting us to get off the plane. A lack-luster end to a long plane ride. Now my base has started something it calls "Operation Homecoming" where they get everyone on this rotator once a month and have a crowd waiting for them when we get home. I've been there to see my fellow colleagues get off the plane and welcome them home, I'm kinda excited about my chance to experience this with my wife and kids waiting for me.
So I have to say I'm for the "huggers" thing. It's like saying "thank you for a job well done".

I think it is a great idea being a soldier myself as Ihave seen troops down in the dumps when they got back because no family or friends to welcome them home. As for what other people think...who cares...who are they to judge when someone is doing something positive for another.

I think it's great, there are so many ppl out there that want to welcome the troops home anyway. My husband will be home in December, and ppl have contacted the base to see if its possible to meet the soldiers at the airport to show support already! I don't think it would be akward at all being that ppl wanna show up anyway!

When I was flying back from Iraq, we landed in Maine and at the airport we met group of VFW and civilian 'huggers" we shook their hands Also they let us use cell phones to call our familiies that we arrived in the U.S. That was a great positive experience and realize I was home.
