Hello,
[in short: 22yrd old pilot wannabe, ged, in college but not 15 credits yet(wants bs engineering), not a citizen (3-4yrs away), medically fit, should have no DQs.]
I would like some input on possible paths I may take from anyone willing to share, or give any input. I have wanted to join the services for a while now, and been working towards it. I haven't joined yet due a few different setbacks, such as I only hold a GED. I am enlisted in College but don't have 15 credits yet, as well as I haven't found my path, or decided exactly which way I want to go.
I aspire to be a pilot, as difficult and challenging as it may be I don't want to be discouraged from pursuing something I've always wanted to do. I am 22, so I need to do a lot of catching up if I am to have any chances of flying. I have done plenty of research and talked to many people as far as options out there. Unfortunately I don't have the means to pay for school on my own, let alone flight hours. I am also not a citizen, so ROTC is out of the question, I have to wait about 3 maybe 4 years until I can file for citizenship. So that is one of my biggest set backs, which presses me to find the best path.
So I look to pursue an education, and that is somewhat of a priority to me since I want to try for officer. I am currently enrolled community college for engineering with the intent to transfer to a 4 year school for a BS.
I have though about joining the reserves or guard meanwhile. I've found that it's tough times to join, all branches overstrengh, few openings and all quotas met or exceeded. I would love your input on paths I could take. I have spoken to an ANG recruiter and a Coast Guard as well. I personally have a novelty desire to join the AF, but fully understand it may not be the path to take. I also can't even consider it until I have 15 credits which may not be for another year. I am fit, don't believe I have any medical DQs or legal, I am very healthy and active. I believe my only set backs are GED, and no citizenship. With all that in mind, what do you guys suggest? I have thought about the guard, reserves, or active duty to expedite citizenship perhaps, smp, etc etc. Foremost I guest I would like to hear from people who have taken similar paths, but I'd appreciate any advice!
Thanks
