Help on 07/13/2010 07:42 pm
Hi Everyone, I'm trying to find some info about my great grandfather, I found his wwI draft reg, it says he was on the SS Walker on pier 13 out of San Fran in 1918, if he was in the service already he wouldn't of had to registered with the draft right? If he wasn't in the service on this ship could he have been a merchant marine or something else? Any sugestions of where to look for any info. Thanks for your help Rhonda Farrer

I cant speak for sure of back then, but when I was in the regular army and under 25 I still had to register for "selective service"(draft) I found it odd since I enlsited at 17(before the age for Selective service to be required) and when I was 19 I had a supervisor inform me that I was at risk of being in trouble for not being registered for the S.S(this was 2001 or so) I thought it odd since you cant draft someone already enlisted, but I just laughed it off and signed the silly sheet anyways. By the time I got fully out I was over 25 and beyond the need to worry, but whatever I guess.

The only thing I can think of to suggest is to contact the nearest naval station. It doesn't necessarily have to be a base on the water, but even a naval air station. You can easily find the nearest one by searching for naval stations on Google. If they have a public affairs or personnel office they would probably be able to find the most information for you. I find the history in stuff like that interesting. My grandmother has my great grandfathers shadow box w/ flag, dog tags, and a registration paper for the Army from WWI. Stuff like that reminds me that I am able to serve because of people like them. Good luck to you, I hope you find something out!
