this is my first post here, hope i dont get flamed to badly... jk pirate4x4 joke. I have decided to join the Navy after loosing interest in college and living in the same area for 21 years. i signed all of the required papers and took a pre drug test (passed no problems) and the pre ASVAB (got a 90 w/out studying) and had this friday set to go off to MEPS.
Well i get a call on monday saying that i have a problem with my juvenile record. I had been ticketed for being responsible for starting a small fire in some pine needles when i was 12 years old. According to the investigator the only reason why i was given this ticket was to get me into the "youth fire starters program" to scare the crap outta me, which it did. since then i have a completely clean record and haven't even been put in silver bracelets for anything.
The recruiter told me that he called his CO and he said that am ineligible to join the navy but the Marines will take me, which sounds very strange to me (all other armed forces will accept me as well) . Now after the call i jumped online and started to read the Navy Recruiting Regulations handbook and found a waiver to bypass this stupid thing. as it turns out in section 2N-4 it has a list of requirements for program eligibility, which i qualify for and then some. Still apparently i cannot join the Navy. i was never contacted by this CO for the required interview or anything, just denied for something i did 9 years ago when i was incompetent.

my question to you guys is what do i do from here?

Hmm yea a lot of people I know tried to get in the Navy and the wouldn't let them in for some stupid reason even though they were qualified. I don't know what to say man but to try to contact people and see what they can do for you. I don't know how the Navy works since I'm in the Army but from what I hear they're not taking in to many recruits nowadays.

Wow....that sounds really strict! My dad was in the Navy and I know he wasn't "innocent" but maybe the rules were different wayyyy back then heh

Contact one of your state legislators. They might be able to help you. Other than that, you don't have much recourse, unless you are trying to get into one of the rates that are seriously understaffed, or are so hard to get into that they never have enough recruits going into them. For those folks they usually are a bit more lenient. Also talk to the recruiter, who may know a way to appeal the decision.

When I got out of the Navy in 05 they were overmanned and letting people out of their service a year early...even if you had opted for the extra year by taking rank. So... they may just not need anymore people and are feeding you a line. I had a waiver when I joined in 01. ID contact other recruiters or the state legislature like they said. All in all though if your looking to join the military and not dead set on the Navy any of the branches are respectable and have most of the same jobs.
