Hey, I am strongly considering switching to active duty because I got laid off from my civilian job. I had a couple of questions for anyone out there. What is an on post house like (approx. sq. ft., am I allowed to paint/ wallpaper) for an enlisted with wife and infant. Is any place really not good to be stationed or is it all just personal preference. I appreciate your answers in advance

I retired in 1988 so things may have changed. You could paint. No wallpaper. Ft. Richardson, Alaska is great and so is Ft. Lewis, Washington. We hated Ft. Polk and Ft. Hood. Ft. Bliss was OK as was Ft. Sill.

SPC Payne,

This is a great question and as far as Army Housing goes, a lot of locations are doing heavy remodeling and renovating to improve the standards of living. I have been in Army housing in Hawaii and Germany. With a wife and child, most places will authorize you a 2 bedroom place which is usually in a stairwell type unit. If there is availability you can get a 3 bedroom, or just have another child and you'll be authorized at least a three bedroom. You still can't put up wallpaper, but you can paint with permission. My 3 bedroom is about 1,089 square feet.

https://onestop.army.mil/ is a great site to get a lot of information on housing for places you go to. Take a look there and that should answer a lot of your questions.

Hope that helps, and good luck!
