Is it too Late to Get Out??? on 05/03/2009 05:56 pm
Hello all, Im here to address an unfortunate question, is it too late to get out after reenlisting on Friday May 01, 2009. As much as I was looking forward to completing my military career with the Army, Im not sure the Army wants me. I reenlisted into the reserves with the objective to apply for Active Guard Reserves.
I requested 31B and my recruiter told me I wouldnt have a problem obtaining it since I have 16 yrs of law enforcement as a criminal investigator and a Masters in Public Administration with a concentration in National Security Affairs. According to my ASVAB in which I took 20 yrs ago I was short of 3 points for 31B however, my recruiter stated she would submit a waiver. Well when I arrived at MEPS a wavier wasnt submitted and I waited 2 full days at MEPS to see if the waiver would be approved. Unfortunately it wasnt, my recruiter went one step further and contact the CO to the unit I was supposed to be assign to as a Sgt project supervisor. The CO submitted a letter of acceptance and requested to wave the 3 points however the request was denied and I was assigned to 88M in addition, I lost my reenlistment bonus.
Not attempting to belittle any MOS but I believe I would be a better soldier as an MP with my background, something I know Im honestly good at. Please advice and I would keep an open mind to all recommendations. Thank you in advance.

If you signed at MEPS you're technically and legally bound. If you didn't swear in then you should take the ASVAB again. If you did swear in then you need to call the recruiter and request to get out of the training cuz you feel you were railroaded. Recruiter will not appreciate it however. Say you feel you did not get the opportunity to to take ASVAB again. If this doesn't work call MEPS and tell them you weren't given the opportunity to take ASVAB again. If you didn't sign at MEPS and swear in then you can basically tell them to F**** off. Any questions let me know! Good luck! If you have any questions I have a # of someone who can spell it out for you.

Thank you Christina! ! I'm trying to fix this, you would think I would know better. Nevertheless, I'm going to stay positive that it's going to workout.

I just hope you didn't sign anything! If you signed knowing that wasn't what you wanted then that is your mistake. People walk in to MEPS thinking that they owe MEPS a favor, no you are about to sign your life away for however many years. You make sure you get the job that you want. So if you signed up that is a big OOPS and i hope you like driving trucks. Trucks in Iraq right now are the targets in CLP's.

SGT Rosario,

In your first sentence you stated that you just reenlisted, which to me means you were already in and enlisting again to continue service ( though I'm guessing you came back in after getting out after rereading). If that is not the case, and you signed paperwork at MEPS, then there isn't a whole lot you can do. How many years did you sign up for? If it is your intent to stay in the Army you can try and re-class to 31B when you reenlist again.

If you are still at MEPS then you are still able to get this changed, and if you haven't signed anything or done the swear-in you can just walk out and say have a nice day.

Both MOS require you to go to an AIT, and until you actually complete it you won't be awarded an MOS. You have until basic is complete (if you are going to basic again) to make the change and get this accomplished.

A little scattered but I hope it helps.
