I was notified by my son that he passed the physical and book testing to get into the SEARS program after basic. I'm so excited for him but have little idea on what tha'ts all about. He is very excited and can't wait to start SEARs training. Anyone out there have any clue what he's in for?

Thanks for your support and responses.

Connie.

That's great for your son! Though I believe you mean SERE training :)

I don't know much about it, except that it's called Survival Evasion Resistance Escape.

Here's something I pulled from google that may help you a little!

I wish your son the best in his Air Force career!

Thank you very much, and I did mean SERE. I'm a former Corps wife so all the information (and correction) I can get will be much appreciated. Thanks Jeremy!

Isn't there a Tier I and Tier II to SERE? I heard that Tier I is a joke (more so an introduction), but Tier II is where its at. I heard that it gets pretty intence in the second Tier because only SF and such rate Tier II.

Carrot Top you're talking to a frmr marine wife so you'll need to talk more in english than AF speak. The only tier one and two I've ever heard of is in the civi world on the railroad.

SERE guys do the training for all the AF and sometimes Army personnel for survival school. How to survive if your plane goes down...wilderness type training. There is another part to it but it should not be discussed on the internet.

Well then there you go, that explains a lot more. Don't really know anything about SERE training or really anything that has to do with the Air Force. Glad to have someone in the AF to help explain things. :)

Son has to go on the DEP program and won't be leaving 23 June as planned, SERE class is full so will have to wait til autumn at earliest to get in. He's bummed.

Jon Earles: Don't know what you're talking about with that second part of SERE training, you're talking to a mom so that's kinda spooky when you say what you did however also frmr marine spouse so I get it too. All I know is my kid grad from H.S. and is waiting to get to basic and SERE training. I'm just glad that all of you are here to help me and my son.

Once your son graduates from BMT he'll go to the idoc course at Lackland then on to I belive Fl. for water survival. I'm pretty sure he'll have one more stop after FL. but my understanding is that all SERE Instructors spend their first three years after tech school in WA.

Hello Marine Corps Spouse!

Former Marine here 82-86, 87-89 and 91. Currently I am in the AF reserves(1999 to present) as a Aircrew Survival Equipment technician( we were formerly called Aircrew Life Support). Anyhow, none of the SERE training is a joke, even the course for aircrew which my AFSC attends also because where there is no SERE instructor, we do the refresher training for our guys. Having SERE as a career field though, his training will be more intense as HE will eventually be training folks at Fairchild for CST, Pensacola (Water parachuting-EASY and fun), and Arctic Survival in Alaska (no fun). He will be pushed to his limits. He needs to really been in great shape before starting SERE as there is a weedout PT test that will take place. AF basic training is not conducive to the type of conditioning he will need for SERE. As a matter of fact, he will probably not be in as good of condition as many of the other trainees for SERE as a lot are pararescue, combat controller, and TACP washouts who were training to be battlefield airmen and did not meet with success. There will be massive amounts of sleep deprivation and continual pressure to do things better and faster as the training goes along and mediocre will not be tolerated by the cadre at SERE school for a SERE pipeline trainee. That being said, it's an awesome job if he makes it and he will be at the tip of the spear providing the type of training for airmen that will make or break them in a survival situation if their plane goes down. Good luck to your son. AF basic training should be a snap for him.

Oh, desert survival as well...not fun at all. There was a "reality type" of show on HULU that was a series of episodes where a class of SERE pipeliners is followed through the training cycle. If you can find it, you can see what your kid will have to go through. A lot has been edited, but you will get the jist of things.
