| | Alright so here is what i'm gonna ask. I was injured at work and basically tore my ACL in my left knee (Anterior Crucia Ligament....i think that's how it spelled) i'm having ACL Reconstructive Surgery on the 22nd.... I've heard that this can disqualify me. Is it true? What can I do? I hope I can still serve my country, my intentions are to become an Officer.....if anyone can let me know for sure, i'd truly appreciate it...Thanks

| | I am no expert but an ACL tear is very difficult to come back from. Much depends on the branch of service and if you have a recruiter willing to fight for you. Call your nearest recruiter and ask, (that is the easiest way to get in touch with them) work HARD on your therapy and in about 6 (to 8) months schedule a stress test with your doctor and tell him what your plans are about the military. See what he recommends. If it is favorable get all documentation from your surgery, post-op, therapy and a doctor's release from care (after he releases you...don't rush it) and give it to the recruiter of your choice. If this is seriously what your are thinking about doing, you will have some work to do. If your are willing to do it the recruiter will work with you and try to get you in.

PS You might want to go to the recruiter after you are released from doctor's care...still have all the paperwork stated above

| | you probably want to look at college or continue taking college, bcuz an torn ACL or ACL repair surgery is a non waiverable thing,so in other words im pretty sure you cant enlist, bcuz your ACL is so sesitive and it will never be 100% healed, the military doesnt want to take the risk at you hurting yourself again and then the military has to take care of it....
i only know this becuase of meps, and a lot of my high school buddies had torn ACL's from football and they where in DEP but they got discharged...

| | My Surgery went awesome!!! Had an awesome surgeon who use to work for the 49ers and ACL Reconstruction is his specialty......He did such a good job, I had a cadaver put in (basically a new ACL) have no pain in the knee, went to a sports recovery center for therapy and am done. I can run and feel as if my knee is alot stronger then it ever was before the surgery. Recruiters say I should be fine as long as the knee isn't giving me any problems and I have all the records and documents needed.... I've asked around and it seems possible but it all comes down to MEPS ya know.....But hey i'm still doing the college thing (graduating soon in Criminal Justice and pre-law). So who knows If I can go i'd be really excited but if not then it's okay.....I just am expecting the worst and praying for the best and seeing where this all takes me

| | Glad everything went well for you. Good luck with your schooling. Remember you can think about officer programs (also) as long as your rehab is going well. Work hard in all that you do. Keep all medical updates and take a chance after you get released from all doctor's care. Again good luck.

| | update omg it's been forever haha....my knee is basically back to normal i have no problems or isssues and in fact i think my run time is way better then before my surgery way back in the day.....i've been in college and want to go as an Officer. So far all the recruiters have said that my knee shouldn't be an issues because i currently have no problems or limitations with it. But I'm studying to become a doctor and plan on joining the military still.

| | I am a recruiter right now and I can tell you it's not going to be a problem. Just make sure you have all of your medical documentation ready. :)
