Basic training what to expect? on 03/24/2009 05:47 pm
Hi I just joined the military and am leaving for basic on April 14th and going to Ft jackson. I am 34 years old and am kinda freaked out about basic. Everyone keeps telling me that I will wish I were dead. What is some advice to be able to handle what I am going to encounter.

Well, depending on the branch... Whatever the fitness standards are, make sure you can exceed them. Don't just meet them. That was my biggest thing when I went in. Have an open mind and learn to keep quiet. When I refer to being quiet, only speak when spoken to and learn your reporting statement. You will be yelled at, and realize that they'll do what they can to test your limits on how much verbal abuse you can take within the confines of not discriminating of course. The usual punishment for things tend to be push-ups over any other exercise there is... Be sharp, learn all they tell you quickly, and when it comes to everyone else. Learn to bring everyone together as a team. Individuals stick out like a sore thumb and will suffer depending on their attitude. That's all I can really say about basic really.

You will be scared stiff and you might get 3 to 4 hours sleep. Staying up late moping and waxing the floors just to do it again over and over. Shining your boots just to get them muddy and dirty. Pressing uniforms for the next day and learn to make a bed that the DI's wont toss. And what food you get learn to eat very fast because your fellow budies are just as hungry as you are. The classes are very boring take good notes then share work as a team. Just stay alert and you will do just fine. Watch out for DI tricks when your on fire guard. And after all this is done you can tall and proud and say I DID THIS MY SELF.

To add on to the other advices....don't get emotional over things. Learn to be a tough cookie and keep it inside of you. Don't be the weak one.
