Greetings:

What are your opinions concerning Hollywood movies about my war in Indo-China?

PLATOON and HAMBURGER HILL were very good about showing the racial problems among American soldiers.

I think HAMBURGER HILL was the only one that showed new guys brushing with that special long term protective toothpaste.

The dentist here at the Old Soldiers' Home still doesn't believe we did that in Viet Nam.

My favorite movies about that war are FORREST GUMP, GARDENS OF STONE, and CASUALTIES OF WAR, for they came the closest to describing my own experiences.

As for APOCALYPSE NOW, I remember that incident where Special Forces troops were being court-martialed for murdering Viet Cong double agents.

I did not like the movie, THE DEER HUNTER.

To begin with, it showed guys in the 101st Airborne wearing subdued patches, and the 101st Airborne was NEVER authorized subdued patches.

We WANTED the enemy to see who we were!

There were only three units in the entire United States Army which did NOT wear subdued patches on their jungle fatigues, the 101st Airborne Division, the 1st Infantry Division, and the 1st Brigade of the 5th Infantry Division (Mechanized).

Thank you.
