One of my grandsons wants to join Navy, he just turned 17. He has mentioned joining the Missouri National Guard first and then after high school transfer to the Navy.... Is that really possible?

Well he can join the service at age 17, as long as he has parental consent... To join any detachment prior to graduating high school is not possible though. The National Guard included...

I signed up my junior year of high school for the Air Force with my parents consent, and then 4 days following my graduation, I was at bootcamp. High school diploma or GED are prerequisite for joining any military branch whether it be active duty, guard, or reserve.

Advise him, in my opinion that he can already exceed the physical standards of the Navy. Makes sure he's truly prepare for what lies ahead being a member of our Armed Forces. If I could do it all over again, I would have been asking a lot more questions and preparing for what lay ahead of me. I hope this information proves useful.

No it is not possible. I am a Navy recruiter and I can tell you that he will need a conditional release to be able to join the Navy. That won't happen. If the National Guard Recruiter says any different he is lying... Good luck to your grandson!!!

he can join the national guard at 17only with parental consent. He would attend basic training during the summer between his junior and senior year of high school and then drill with his unit for a year and then he would after graduation go to his AIT training. I had a few friends who entered the national guard that way. right now the shortest time contracts are being givin out for is for 3 years so unless your grandsons national guard unit were to conditionally release him he would have to wait for at least that amount of time from joinig the NG till he went into the Navy

I personally think it would be best to stick to one branch of the service. I currently enlisted in the Army Reserve at 17 and was meant to do 9 weeks of training in the summer after Junior year and then do AIT after senior year but instead I stacked up on credits and am graduating early to do my BCT and AIT together. If he really wants to go Navy, I think he should join the Navy Reserve and later switch to Active Duty or go to college in the Navy Reserve and do NROTC and become an officer (which is what I plan on doing in the Army). Hope I helped. Good luck to your grandson.
