Greetings:
I noticed "Marine Reject" on that list!
Believe it, or not, that's EXACTLY what happened to me!
Because of some traumatic events in my youth, my draft board classified me as "IV-F" (i.e., "unfit for military service").
Still, I tried to join the United States Marine Corps, for I wanted that dress blue uniform to impress girls (and don't we all?).
I wrote a letter to the President of the United States, Lyndon Baines Johnson, explaining that other guys were burning their draft cards, fleeing to Canada, or deserting the military.
So, I was reclassified "I-A" (i.e., "fit for military service").
I tried again to enlist in the United States Marine Corps.
I almost made it.
I passed all the tests, and was told I'd be assigned to Marine Aviation.
But, thirty minutes before I was to be sworn in, they said no.
Boy, was I devastated!
The Navy and the Air Force both had long waiting lists, requiring many months.
That's because everybody wanted to be in the Navy or the Air Force, and nobody wanted to be in the United States Army or the United States Marine Corps.
Hey, we were in a war, and soldiers and marines get killed.
Anyway, I finally went to enlist in the United States Army and - - - they said no.
So, I went to the draft board and volunteered to be drafted.
That automatically put me at the head of the list, which meant I was going in the Army, for in a draft, the Army, which is the senior service, always gets the first pick of the draftees.
That's how I became a soldier in the United States Army.
Hey, I'm in pretty good company.
Audie Murphy went into the Army after being rejected by the Marines, and became America's most decorated hero.
By the way, one of my favorite movies is "BABY BLUE MARINE", starring Jan-Michael Vincent.
Have you seen it?
It's about a Marine who washes out of boot camp, and is sent home in disgrace, wearing a Marine issued baby blue suit.
I won't ruin the show for you by telling you any more details.
But, it has a happy ending, similar to my own.
Thank you.
