| | I am in the process of planning out career fields for each branch by adding the MOS's to our database and allowing people to select their career field. I have found a listing of the Army MOS''s but I am going to tie your "badge" to your career field and I am trying to figure out what goes where. So any information that will help me link the correct badge to the correct MOS I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

| | Can someone explain the different badges on this photo to me:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/2d/Peter_Schoomaker.jpg
Also can their be any other badges on his uniform? I want for you guys to be able to select all these badges to add them to your profile.

| | The top one is easy. That is the CIB (Combat Infantry Badge)
The bottom one is one you don't have to worry about, too much - it's the Joint Chiefs of Staff (probably not too many of us were in that office)
Below the fruit salad is the Master Parachutists Badge.
The one next to it is one i don't regognize.
On his right side he wears two unit citations. on the left is the JOINT MERITORIOUS UNIT AWARD, and the next is the VALOROUS UNIT CITATION
Under the unit citations is what I think is the Army Staff Identification Badge. Above the unit citations, I don't recognize. The shoulder pieces are self-explanatory
There are a LOT of additional badges that could be worn on an Army uniform. Here is a page that describes some http://usmilitary.about.com/od/army/l/blarbadges.htm.

| | The badge next to his Master Parachutist Badge is the Military Freefall Parachutist Badge (HALO/HAHO). The badge above his unit awards is a foreign parachutist badge. I think it is the Thailand badge, but I'm not sure. Above that is the Special Forces crest.
p.s. You can't really tie the badges to the MOS. Most Army badges, with a few exeptions, such as the Expert/Combat Infantry Badge and the Medic Badges, aren't MOS-specific.

| | Ok, In the Air Force (I am using this as I know it) you can have up to three Occupational/Skill badges. You have your primary AFSC, Secondary AFCS, and a third. These badges look like the one below the ribbon rack on the left. My first step is to link up your primary mos code to the appropriate badge. So my first question is how many can you have? It seems he has 3 on his uniform. The infantry badge, and the two on the pocket below the ribbon rack.
What I am going to do in under the military information section below rank and status. Depending on your status (if you were in the military), then I am going to show another area to select a branch, and then based on the branch I will show how many job badges you can have to select. Then I will display them your profile. Obviously each job has a different skill level so I will have the correct skill level you can choose from. I may just output the images for you to choose, I havent quite decided on that part but I will make sure you can have the correct skill level badge.
Then after all the branches are done we can work on other badges and then get into the units which I know everyone is wanting.

| | Do not try to link the badges to the MOS. There are no "MOS badges" in the Army. Our equivalents would be the regimental crest (worn above the unit awards or a foreign badge; above the Thai jump wings in GEN Schoomaker's picture; I wouldn't worry too much about including these on the site) and the branch insignia (worn on the collar; if you want to include these, you can find them at http://www.tioh.hqda.pentagon.mil/Branches/BranchandCollarInsignia.htm) that we wear on our class A/B uniforms.
Like I previously posted, badges are not directly related to a specific MOS (and you still have to meet certain criteria to wear the badges that are related to one specific MOS or branch) For some reason, it seems impossible to find a complete list of approved badges anywhere online, but I don't think you'll run into too many complaints if you at least include the badges listed here: http://www.army.mil/symbols/

|
| | Now that someone mentioned it, how about the unit crests that we soldiers wore on our epaulettes and even at one time on the fatigue caps and other caps. I wore crests for all the battalions and service schools, but none in Vietnam. I have images of my creasts save on my computer.

|
| | Dustin is right - Do not try to link the badges to the MOS. For the Army the best identifier for the job would be the branch insignia which everyone recognizes and everyone in the unit wears from the commander down to the cooks.

| | Hmm ok let me tell you want I know so I can figure out how to best approach these codes. I will explain the Air Force and how I have that working.
If you go here: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/airforce/l/blafbadges.htm
That lists all the occupation badges for the Air Force. Your job is an AFSC code. For instance mine was 2A0X1 and I was a B shread. Anway the "X" in the code is replaced by the level you have achieved. For instance if you are in tech school your code would be 2A011. '1' meaning student. You have not achieved that badge. Then there are 3 Level, 5 Level, 7 Level... etc. The badges are different for each level. First has no start, next level has a star, and then the last level has a star with a wreath around it.
What I am doing is listing all the AFSC's (Enlisted and Officers are separate) with the "X". Then when you select your code then 4 options (this will be specific to the afsc) come up for you to select.
No Badge
Basic Badge (no star)
Senior Badge (star)
Master Badge (star/wreath)
You can see these here: http://usmilitary.about.com/library/milinfo/afbadges/blmaintenance.htm
That was my badge in the AF. Also you can have "other" AFSC's. Its broken down like this:
Primary AFSC
Duty AFSC
Control AFSC
Most times they can be all the same. Other times they can be all different. I'm not sure if you can wear all 3 badges but I have seen two. Notice this picture here: http://www2.afsoc.af.mil/shared/media/photodb/photos/030131-O-9999J-001.jpg
and here: http://www.af.mil/shared/media/photodb/photos/060519-F-2270A-007.JPG
So by showing the badges associated to the the AFSC I can allow the user to select what badge they achieved.
Thats basically how the AF works.
That is my first step in including "Badges" to the Air Force. I am looking for an equivalent to that. Well obviously everything will be branch specific I am trying to figure out the best way to present that to the army for it to make sense.
Take a look here: http://www.uniformdisplay.com/displaycase2/ARE1.jpg
My end goal is to be able to let you guys have every badge known to man. I just need to focus on the silver badges in this photo for now.
So the Army, if you select your MOS code. That describes your job I assume. Now how many different ones can you have and are their any badges tied to that. Or do you just achieve these badges for performing certain actions?
Thanks guys for all the help so far. I hoping to have all the images done for the Air Force today so I want to try and get all this figured out so the Army can be next and then I will need to figure out the other branches after that.

The Army works differently from the Air Force, as far as badges are concerned (and just about everything else, I think. There is the Right Way, the Wrong Way, and the Army Way.)
With the Exception of the Combat Infantry Badge (also the Expert Infantry Badge) and the Combat Medic Badge, which are VERY MOS specific, most badges may be earned by any MOS. Example, you can have cooks or truck drivers who are Airborne qualified, and thus can wear "Jump Wings." Anyone who is involved in ACTUAL combat can wear the new Combat Action Badge, no matter what their MOS (except Infantry and Medics, of course.)
Soldiers do wear Branch Insignia on their collar, on the Class A uniforms. The insignia in the above image is Aviation. The uniform also shows Jump Wings, and an Expert weapons qualifications badge, on the left side.
Good Luck.

| | LOL Good Luck.... Ok in doing the Air Force I have found some badges that aren't job specific such as pilot wings. So in my thinking, When you select your job and if their are any job specific badges for that job, they will come up for you to select. Then I will have another section where you can manually add any other badges you may have.
I doubt there is a limit to however many badges you can have so I need a way to be able to show the badges that a user has selected in a nice neat way. I want to put the badge thats supposed to go over the ribbons there, but I am thinking not everyone will have a badge that goes there?
Im making progress I think :)

| | Ok I am going to use this as a starting list:
http://www.army.com/resources/item/844
Now does this include enlisted and officers? Or is officers separate as in the Air force?
Thanks guys!
|
|
| | Ok I am going to use this list instead.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_Army_MOS
|
|
| | Ok I have added the MOS Codes for the Army, they are found under the Military Settings. Check it out as its just a drop down with a listing. Let me know your thoughts.
|
|
| | I added the MOS, and it seemed to work fine. Thanks (Of course in MY day there were a lot more codes, LOL)
|
|
| | I was a 63B20 and was awarded the Mechanics Badge in Aug 1977 at Fort Riley, KS

|
| | Hey Dennis,
I was looking at the MOS codes great work. However my MOS is not listed. Under the 11 series there should be
11M which is Mechanized Infantry.
|
|
| | That's exactly what I meant by a lot more MOS's in my day. I think that the 11M has been discontinued, and rolled up into 11B/11C. There were other Infantry MOS codes - 11D/ 11F/11H and maybe even some more that have been discontinued.
