New to the board, hopefully someone can answer some questions I have about volunteering to return to Iraq, or deploy to afghanistan.

Thank you

This really depends on your assignment and your rank in regards to volunteering as an individual augmentee. Now what you can do is work with your branch manager and ask for a new assignment where that unit will be deploying. I would recommend finding a unit leaving in about 6-12 months. This will allow you to outprocess your current assignment, report to your new unit, and go through the train-up with that unit. Now if you are new to the Army and completing your initial training, you take whatever you get. Your at the needs of the Army for your first assignment. If that unit isn't deploying, then consider yourself lucky. My advice is deploying is unavoidable for most. Take the down time while you can take it especially if you have a family.
