| | What's everyone's first duty assignment? When were you there? And would you recommend it to others?
I was at Robins AFB Dec 96 - Aug 99
It depends on your unit, but I wasn't happy in the comm sq. I think I'd have been happier in the mob.

| | Officially, K.I. Sawyer AFB in Michigan (Da UP eh!), however luckily I managed to get on several TDY's (Semback-Creek Warrior/Reforger; Little Rock AFB-Volant Scorpion; JTF Bavo; Operation Just Cause and several others) which somewhat reduced my time in the cold, wet white stuff (just not enough for me!)for the 6 years I was in. Seems that everytime we had an ORI it managed to be conducted in either a blizzard or an ice storm.
Walking around the BUFF's in that weather and the ground heater always only being no more than half full of fuel made life on the alert and C-ramps pretty, uh what's the word here.......disenchanting, no that ain't right; miserable, at times but not overall..............uhhh, COLD!!!!!, yeah that fits.
If it were still open, I would recommend it to anyone that was into hunting, fishing, snow activities, etc......unfortunately, I am not one of those people.....strange as to why I stayed in Michigan after I got out???????
I was in the SPS on the Security side of the house and had a great time with the guys I worked with and the guys I met on the TDY's.......at times mundane and tedious duty, but we somehow always made things "interesting," shall we say (doughnut competitions on the C-ramp during snow storms; pitching snowballs behind the engines while they were running, helping AC pull pranks on the new air acrew members, etc).

| | My first duty station was Bolling AFB, DC. I loved being there. The people were awesome and I made a lot of friends. I would definitely recommend being stationed at Bolling AFB.
| | My First Base is Eglin AFB FL. My Hometown and it sucks
| | Barksdale AFB,Louisiana. Also known as "Barkatraz". as a weapons loader stationed here we are stuck unless we go to Korea. it is a great location. lots of things to do if you like casino's and bars and strip clubs.

| | My first duty station will be Ramstein AFB, Germany and I'll know how it is after next Saturday when I fly out there.
:o

| | For us its Mannheim Germany. I would recommend it just for the traveling alone. There are so many beautiful and historical places around here. However the cost of living, the cost of the Euro is a down fall. There are a couple negatives but there are a lot of positives as well. Just with any place, but I always say home is what you make of it. But I am really looking forward to moving back to the states shortly, especially with the conviences that are there. Its amazing when you don't have that, you tend to miss them.
Great thread and I really enjoyed this. It will be great to see what people say about it. BTW my favorite place stationed when I was kid was MacDill AFB - Tampa, Florida. Florida will always be home for me and how can you go wrong when Disney World is down the street from ya!
Ton of hugs Mel

| | Our First duty station was BEALE AFB, CA.
We were there from Oct 95 to April 2006...FOREVER!!
It's not all that bad, a lot of driving in order to actually do anything, but you get use to it.
15 min drive from base housing to the main gate, 10 min from housing to the flightline, but there are a total of 5 gates on the base. The "medical hobby shop" is a joke, and I really don't have anything nice to say about them.
There is shopping, San Francisco( 2.5 hours), the coast (2-3 hours), the mountains & skiing, Reno is less than 3 hours, to name a few things. THe only negative is the price of housing there is OUTRAGEOUS!!!

| | Beale AFB we were only there for about a year.
HI CAROL!!!!!:D

| | First Base was Pease AFB, Portsmouth, NH Oct 1969 to Dec 1971. Arrived as an E2 and left with a line number for E5. Course, there was a small war going on in SE Asia at the time.
| | My first base is Elmendorf AFB, I've been here for going on 2 1/2 years now, and it isn't all that bad once you get use to the weather. Lots of outdoor activity here. Other than that, it's pretty damn boring. The city itself is dirty. Lots of bums, and druggies hanging around on the streets. I've only got 6 months left here and I'm ready to go.

| | Charleston AFB :) 1997-2001. I would recommend to people that enjoy golf, history, and ghosts. Tons of history and haunted places. Nice golf courses.
| | Eglin AFB, not bad I guess... it could be worse.
| | Davis-Monthan AFB. Nice, but to warm for me, i'm from Anchorage AK. ha!
| | Soesterberg AB The Netherlands AWESOME too bad iit is closed
| | First duty station was Nellis AFB, Nevada right outside good old Las Vegas. Not a good place at the time for a 19 year old. But overall it wasn't a bad assignment. Met a bunch of great people there.
| | K.I. Sawyer AFB in the UP of Michigan. It was closed in 95 I believe. I was with the 2001st Comm Sqdn. I've been up there a couple
times in the past two years, it's a pretty sad site now.

| | Edwards AFB was my first in 1988. 480 sqaure acres of pure kitty litter. 14 miles to the base gate, another 10 miles to get to the base perimiter, another 10 miles to get to Lancaster, the nearest town. That sucked. But, two hours dirve and you could be in Las Vegas or on the sunny beachs of sothern california.
